About Spacebar Clicker

Spacebar Clicker is an idle game with almost nothing in it: a counter, a big SPACEBAR button, and a list of upgrades you buy to press the key for you. Your presses are your money, and the upgrades you buy turn into a per-second rate that keeps climbing on its own. The list runs from silly to absurd — a monkey bashing a keyboard, a boomer mom, a Gen Z kid, and eventually machines that fire lasers at the spacebar.

It was made by CrociDB for js13kGames 2021, a jam with a 13-kilobyte size limit, and that constraint shows in a good way. There are no images and no loading screen; the whole game is one file that starts the moment it opens. This site hosts a copy of it.

The story behind Spacebar Clicker

Spacebar Clicker was made by CrociDB for js13kGames 2021, a game jam where the whole entry has to fit inside 13 kilobytes. That size limit is why it opens instantly and why it looks the way it does: a counter, one big button, and a list of upgrades, with no art assets. The source is public on GitHub under the CrociDB account, and the game went on to be picked up by browser game portals and hosted under its own name as a standalone clicker.

This site hosts a copy of that game — it wasn't made here. Credit for the design and code belongs to CrociDB.

How to Play Spacebar Clicker

You press the spacebar, or tap the big SPACEBAR button on screen, and each press adds one spacebar to your counter. That number is both your score and your money. The screen is just three things: the counter at the top, your per-second rate under it, and a list of upgrade cards that reveal themselves as you get closer to affording them.

Spending spacebars is the whole strategy. Most cards are pressers that work for you — a Monkey, a Boomer Mom, a MOBA Gamer, and stranger things further down the list — and each one adds to your per-second rate, which ticks up by itself. The Keyboard Upgrade card is different: it doubles what your own presses are worth. Costs rise every time you buy, and the game saves in your browser, so you can close the tab and come back to the same run.

Thoughts

What I like about this one is that your own hand never stops mattering. In most clickers you press for two minutes and then the game plays itself, but here the Keyboard Upgrade card doubles your personal presses over and over, so a good run is still partly about how fast you can actually tap. Watching the counter roll past millions while you're still doing the work is the appeal.

It's also a grind, and I'd rather say so. The early upgrades come fast, then there's a long stretch where the next card costs far more than you're earning, and that part is more waiting than playing. It's a minute-or-two game, not a sit-down-for-an-hour game — good in a spare moment, rough on your wrist if you take it seriously.

Tips & Strategies

  1. Use both inputs at once. The keyboard spacebar and the on-screen button are two separate ways to score, so alternating hands — space, click, space, click — gets you roughly double the presses per second.
  2. Don't hold the spacebar down. The game ignores key repeat and only counts a press after you release the key, so fast clean taps beat leaning on it.
  3. Buy the Monkey early. At 30 spacebars it's the cheapest thing on the list and it keeps earning while you stop to read or rest your hand.
  4. Take Keyboard Upgrade sooner than it looks worth it. Every level doubles the value of your own presses, so one early level doubles everything you do for the rest of the run — and its price doubles each time you buy it, so it only gets more expensive.
  5. Leave the tab open. Per-second income only ticks while the game is running, and there is no offline payout when you come back, so nothing accrues while the tab is shut.

Spacebar Clicker FAQ

Does holding the spacebar down work?

No. The game only counts one press per key-down, and it waits for you to let go before the next one registers. Resting something heavy on the key won't do anything — you have to tap.

Can I click the button instead of using the keyboard?

Yes, and you should use both. Clicking the SPACEBAR button and pressing the spacebar key are counted separately, so you can do one with each hand and score faster.

Does Spacebar Clicker save my progress?

Yes — it stores your score and upgrades in your browser, so the run continues when you come back. There's a reset link in the footer if you want to start over, and it asks first.

Can I play it on a phone or tablet?

Yes — tapping the SPACEBAR button works. You just lose the second input, since there's no physical spacebar to tap alongside it.
