Paper.io 2 is a territory game in the .io style. You control a coloured square in an arena full of other squares, and your job is to own as much of the floor as you can. Leave your own land and you draw a trail; get back to your border and the loop closes, turning everything inside into your colour.
What makes it tense is that your trail is also your lifeline. Anyone who crosses it ends your run instantly, so every land grab is a gamble between how much you can enclose and how long you're willing to walk around unprotected. Cut someone else's trail and you get the same reward — their land collapses and you can sweep it up.
Paper.io 2 is by Voodoo, the Paris-based studio founded in 2013. It's the sequel to the original Paper.io, which Voodoo released in late 2016 and which rode the same .io wave that made agar.io and slither.io huge — you're a small square drawing loops to claim land, and your trail is your weak spot. Paper.io 2 launched on iOS and Android in 2018, and the browser version followed in 2019.
This site hosts a copy of that browser version, not the original. One thing worth knowing about the series: reporting at the time noted that the first Paper.io's arenas were filled with computer-controlled opponents rather than real players, which is how it could run without a connection. This browser build plays the same way — you against rivals in a closed arena.
You start as a small square inside a patch of your own colour. Drive out of your territory and you start drawing a trail behind you. Loop that trail back around to your own land and everything you enclosed flips to your colour. The bigger the loop, the more you gain — but the longer you're outside your own border, the more exposed you are.
The catch is the tail. Your trail is a live wire: if an opponent crosses it, you're dead and your territory is up for grabs. The same works in your favour — cut across someone else's trail and you take them out. You can also die by running into another player's trail or into their body, so the game is mostly about reading the arena and knowing when to dash out and when to stay home.

Paper.io 2 is one of those games that looks like nothing and then eats half an hour. The whole thing is a square and a line, but the risk is genuinely real — the second you leave your border you're watching a tail you can't fully see, and one greedy loop is usually the last one.
I think it's worth playing for short bursts rather than long sessions. Rounds are quick, and the fun is in the decisions: whether to snipe the person who just wandered past, or stay home and slowly fatten your territory. It's not deep, but it's honest — every death is something you did.
A territory game: you steer a square around an arena, draw loops to claim land, and try to cut other players' trails without losing your own.
Move to draw a trail, then return to your own colour to close the loop and claim everything inside it. Touch an opponent's trail and they die; let them touch yours and you do.
Yes — the browser version supports touch, so you can tap and drag to steer. A keyboard works too if you're on a laptop or desktop.
This browser version is you against computer-controlled rivals in a closed arena, not a live server full of people.
